How to Wash Grapes

I used to clean grapes just by washing them under the running tap water. However, I found that it is not clean enough. The white powdery coating on the skin will still be there and leave some bitter taste in my mouth when I eat them.

It made me reluctant to buy grapes, even though I really love their taste.

But since my friend, Verawaty, told me that I can actually clean and get rid of the white powdery coating on the grapes, I am always happy whenever I spot a box of fresh grapes at the supermarket =D

How to:

  1. Remove the grapes from the stem and put them in a wide and shallow bowl.
  2. Sprinkle 1-2 tsp of salt on the grapes.
  3. Shake the bowl (right and left/front and back) to let the salt do the scrubbing and rubbing action on the grapes.
  4. Rinse the grapes under the running tap water to remove the salt.
  5. Now you can enjoy your  clean and tasty grapes. Yipeee!!! =D

I also happened to read a blog and find out that we can also cleanse grapes by using cornstarch and baking soda. You might want to give it a try, if you find it more convenient =)

PS. Only wash the grapes when you are ready to eat them because the excess moisture created by washing speeds up the grapes’ decay.

Mmm…Is it because the grapes here are all imported and therefore they spray or put more pesticide? I am not sure…hehehe But sometimes the grapes here have so many white powdery stain on them =(

  2. Thanks so much for this! I knew there had to be a better way of cleaning grapes 🙂 And today I came home with a beautiful bag of big red grapes, “washed” one under water and popped it in my mouth only to be completely disappointed by the bitter taste 😦 I just tried the salt trick and tasted another one and my goodness, are they delicious!

I will be posting about this on my blog and will link back to this post 🙂 Thanks again!

You can also use Ascorbic Acid crystals. Add 1 tsp to a cup of water and place the grapes or any other produce in it. Soak for 10-15 minutes. rinse thoroughly.

The white powdery coating is some kind of yeast. To clean grapes, remove from stem, put them in a broad bowel, add water it they immerse add 2 drops of oil spread evenly with your fingers
drain the water, again clean with fresh water. Amazingly clean and shiney grapes are ready for consumption
